What the ”F” is up with the “F” word today?
Wow, this site has been an eye opener. A hundred years ago when I was young, most of the young people had goals, positive ideas and out looks on the future, and a solid idea of right and wrong. How things have changed. Take for example, the “F” word. Always the ace in the hole for teen age expression, this word was used in my time when no other word seemed to capture the meaning of the statement being made. Take a look at the movie quote page, or go to your local movie rental place, and see how things have changed. Now, you folks worship the big “F“. This explains why movies like “Super Bad” are so popular today. Sure, back in the day a younger John McClain might have used the “F” word in combination with “yippi-ki-I-ya mother…”, when dispatching a murdering master thief. That would be in the first Die Hard movie for those of you who were not around yet back then.
Today the word is used so much it has lost its ability to shock, unless used by a Republican Politician. Then it is on the news for a month. By and large, the word has been down graded to common, and I fear that in a year or two, we will see this word on primetime programming.
“Super Bad” by the way is possibly the second dumbest movie in the world, the first slot is reserved for Al Gore’s next movie.
So, is the “F” word just that expectable these days, or are people today just too lazy or ignorant to put the thought required to use a different word, or set of words, some times called a sentence, to express themselves?

I dunno, I swear a lot. Like I have the combination of a trucker and a sailor's mouth. But my vocabulary is quite good, even if I do say so myself. Sometimes a swear word is more emphatic than a non-swear.
Though in saying this, I absolutely do not use the words in front of my daughter.

Haha in the character's defense, he was high on crack. xD (Referring to the movie I quoted from in the movie quotes thread.)
I do think people overuse cuss words just to sound hardcore. I only use cuss words around people I'm comfortable with, never to people I've just met or adults or teachers and whatnot.

I do agree some people do swear to look hard. I'm not one of those people though

By the by, I did not start this thread as some sort of personal attack on any one in particular, I was just questioning. I my self have been known to use the word, most notably when watching politics on c-span.

It feels good. When you're having a fucking bad day, and you can't find your fucking stress ball, and you want to fucking bang your head against a fucking wall but you can't because your skull hurts like you've got a fucking hangover, it feels pretty darn good to yell "fuck" at the top of your lungs.
Just my humble opinion.

Lmao, I agree with LDM. Well, I guess I technically swear a lot..then again, so does everyone here. Including teachers and politicans. I think it's hilarious how much the US population in particular seem to care about the use of words of their politicians. Here, it's pretty much normal for our Prime Minister to say, in a an official speech, that the AEX had a shitty ( *insert extra Dutch swearing words* )..day. The more 'shocking' swearingwords? nah, not really. I have a very colourful and expressive swearingwords vocabulairy, but most swearingwords that are considered offensive here really are. It's perfectly normal to call someone a 'kut' ( vagina, the non-nice version 0, or 'lul' ( penis, the non-nice version ) here, but 'kanker' (cancer), which is really offensive..I think it lacks style and respect to use a fatal disease as a swearingword. So I guess I technically use swearingwords, but those have always been part of the normal language here, so it's not shocking, not even to older people. I think I could learn some from my grandpa. ;D oh, and Fuck is very popular here too. It's just one of those primitive, super-anger-frustration-expressing sounds. We loooove it down here. xP

I think fuck is a great word! So many meanings and emotions in one single syllable! ;D Fuck has been used in the English language (most likely for the action as well as the expression) since way before Medieval times. It's not going anywhere
