I grew up with my Dad in the navy, and all of my male relatives had conservative hair cuts. My hair is quite long these days, and we are letting our 5 year old boy grow his hair as long as he wants, so long as he allows it to be washed and combed out. The truth is, I like the look of long hair on guys and gals. What are your thoughts?

I personally think a person, guy or girl, should be able to do whatever they wish with their hair. It's seriously none of our business and if you don't like it, no one said that you had to see it. Just ignore it.

I pretty much love long hair on guys. I find it a very attractive quality, though it's not a 'dealbreaker'. The most important thing is personality...but I do so love to run my fingers through a long mane of well looked after hair.

Well, I do agree with each to their own and all that, I was really asking your opinion on it. Do you like it, not. Draivynn got it. Also, even with an open minded way of looking at life, do you think long hair effects the way you look at some people. Would you have second thoughts about your male lawyer if he had a braid down to his but, or something like that?

It really depends on how they wear it. If it doesn't look good with the rest of them, bleh. If it looks nice on them, heck yes. xD But yeah, it really depends on how it looks for me. Some guys look better with longer hair, some with short hair.
As for a lawyer with long hair... I wouldn't really mind it. But today, it wouldn't be generally accepted, and if he's really serious about his career and his professionalism, his hair should be cut. But of course that specific "professional" look might change over time.

Like Melissa said, it depends on the guy. Sometimes it looks good, sometimes it doesn't and there's really nothing they can do about it. It's a preference thing.
On the flip side, I tend to keep my hair short and I'm a girl. That's really for convenience's sake as much as for anything else because there's nothing I hate more than to have to pick a long hair off a wet canvas. I like long hair on guys a lot, but I won't be picky about it because I know how much of a hassle it is for me to have long hair.
Don't judge a book by its cover, etc etc.

Long hair on a lawyer? I'd be more inclined to trust them if that were the case XD

I like long hair on guys (gee, you couldn't have guessed that). As to their profession or general impression, it depends on the profession, the person, and societal views in general. I probably wouldn't have an issue with a lawyer with long hair in some cases, but I'm not sure how I'd feel about it if he were defending me in a murder trial or something. That doesn't have anything to do with my personal perception, but with the court's perception. Same goes for a lot of other jobs. If you're a computer programmer, long hair would in many cases be a plus. Why? It's against the norm, and computer geeks (no offense, it's how my dad refers to himself, with pride) have to think outside the box to do a good job. I probably wouldn't like a doctor that had long hair, because I'd be concerned about his attention to detail and hygene. Same for a mechanic, oddly enough. Anything where you could get your hair caught in your work would make me wonder.
As to the person, if their hair is clean and well kept, long hair is gorgeous. If on the other hand its some over-age, over-weight biker dude with his belly hanging out of this shirt and his long hair in greasy hanks all over his head, I don't think I'd trust him too much, nor find him particularly attractive.
Society changes it's perceptions on hairstyles all the time. It wouldn't surprise me if long hair comes back into the mainstream style again sometime in the next few decades. Right now, I think it is still strongly associated with the hippie movement in a lot of adult minds, and therefore viewed with some disdain.

I know of many mechanics that have long hair and they do there job exceptionally well. One of my old friends is a bike mechanic and he is essentially the top guy at his shop now. Him having short hair wouldn't make a difference.
I'd also have no issue with a Doctor with long hair either. It'd be required to be tied back at all times and if he was say a surgeon he'd be in his full scrubs and his hair would be kept under wraps during surgeries. It's no different to a female doctor to me.
So long as someone does there job well and to the best of there ability. I see no issue with it. Sadly society does.

Absolutely. That would be nothing more than an initial personal concern on my part, probably partially based in societal views. Being an occasionally rational human being, it probably wouldn't be a deciding factor in my patronage of any particular person, either. 'Tis just a first impression kind of thing, and entirely my own. I find this topic a little entertaining actually, as it's kind of fun to evaluate my perceptions on something a little less intense than politics and religion, but much more broad ranging and gut level than those subjects tend to be. As I said earlier too, I'm all for long hair on a guy. The five year referred to in the original post is mine, and I am one of the most vehement objectors when people suggest we cut his hair so he stops being mistaken for a girl. He happens to have very round cheeks and nose, dimples, a pretty smile, and long eye lashes, so if he's dressed, and sleeping or still, the mistake is easy to make, until he starts moving. He plays like a boy. I, myself, have pretty long hair, and don't like to keep it short. So, I know very well on a conscious level that it is perfectly safe to have long hair and work in any profession, as long as care is taken. It's weird how our conscious perceptions so often conflict with our subconscious ones.

I absolutely LOVE long hair on boys/guys/men. The longer the better ;D I find it incredibly sexy. That's not saying it's a deciding factor for me when it comes to male partners - I'd love him regardless of the length of his locks (or lack thereof lol) - its just happens to be a major attraction thing for me. I'd also have no problem with a long-haired [male] doctor, lawyer, priest - heck even prime minister, king or president. It's just hair! And like Draivynn said, it's really no different from a long-haired female doctor, lawyer or prime minister. Besides, our current Minister of Finance (same as Secretary of the Treasury) has semi-long hair (shoulder length) that he usually keeps in a pony tail.

@tera. I think that's where we differ. I don't have an immediate reaction like that.
I also think that you letting your son grow his hair out to be very awesome. I know if I had've had a son instead of a daughter I'd be the same way.
That is majorly awesome btw. I wish we had cool politicians like that.

I come from a long line of Scottish/military/pirates. Thus I cannot pull it of. However some guys can and I have no problem with that. I find it cool that you let your child grow his hair out, my parents wouldn't , but that was probably for the best.

I have long long hair and I'm a guy, I see nothing wrong with it just how I see nothing wrong when girls have short hair. I do get stereotyped quiet a bit though, but that's mostly because I wear tight pants and black band tee's lol Each time I enter a new grade level and get new teachers or have a sub. I get somewhat strange looks, and occasionally the "Wow when I first saw you enter this class I didn't expect much of you" lecture -_- It's even worse when army recruiters come to my school and they target me out of all my friends but it's always fun to see the look on their face when they ask what I plan to do after highschool and my GPA.

I think it depends on the person.
If Edward^ ever cut his hair I would cry, and if my boyfriend ever grew it out I would pin him down and braid it until he cut it off. Or sneak pretty clips in his hair before he went to work. lucky me he's trying to grow it out. <3 I need to invest in bows.

What do you guys think of long-haired male teachers? This was one of my younger brother's high school teachers: I would personally love to have had a teacher like that back in school, haha. I'm currently working as a nanny and the school one of the younger kids goes to has a male teacher who has long hair (way down his back) and walks around wearing Rock and Metal t-shirts. He's awesome! And he's even one of the teachers for the little kids (K-3 grade).

It really depends on your definition of 'long'. For my dad, 'long' is when his natural curls start to become visible, but when I think of guys with long hair, I think of the members of Dragonforce.
Waist-length hair on guys isn't really that attractive to me. Sure, it looks great on guys when they're headbanging and rocking out, but when it's not flying through the air, it looks yucky. Then again, I don't really like guys with really short hair, either, because that just screams "boring" to me. (Especially those practically bald military cuts...)
I tend to like guys with around chin-length hair. But that's just me. *shrug*
