Put music discussions here.
--------------- Being that I have insomnia and I watch a lot of late-night television, I see a lot of new music videos. And then I see them again and again and again until I'm forced to pay attention. One in particular is Katy Perry/Zooey Deschanel's I Kissed a Girl.
I actually really like Katy Perry, though her older stuff appeals to me much more than this new electronicized thing she's going for with her CD One of the Boys.I have a lot of respect for her for being versatile.
And, boys and girls, I Kissed a Girl has not ceased making me laugh. I mean, come on. It's a joke song, just like most of her stuff plays a joke on one thing or another. I've had plenty people rant to me about it, whether just calling it pointless and stupid or anti-Christian. That also makes me laugh because if they actually listened to the song or, better yet, watched the video, they would know it's just some silly joke. It's a fun song to dance to, really catchy and the video's just skimpy enough to be adult-oriented and not Hannah Montana-meets-Vanity Faire-meets-internet, but also playful enough to be fun to watch.
My favorite part about the song? The fact that she just did it and made a joke about it and who the hell cares? That's what music is supposed to be like. Freedom of expression.
I'm a total music buff so other discussions are definitely welcome in this thread =P I just happened to be listening to this song in particular.

I know what you mean about insomnia. I've got chronic insomnia and have found myself listening to all sorts of music at night. Whilst I'm not really fond of that particular song I can't understand how people could take it so seriously. I don't like it because it's not my style of music not because of its content. This applies to books and movies. Some people don't like books that include magic in the story because they think that book is teaching people to worship the Devil or something. It's just a book/movie/song meant to be enjoyed for goodness sake.

I here you on that sentiment Lareal, about the books, it really is starting to piss me off, but anyways I don't understand how people can be so ignorant and naive to put down a song that is meant to be entertainment, if they don't like it then don't listen to it. Change the damn channel if it comes on and put it out of your life.

I think that this particular Katy Perry song is ridiculously catchy. Like, I want to hate it, but it's constantly stuck in my head. And I think that people freaking out about it is to be expected, because America as a whole is ridiculously politically correct, to the point where jokes can't be made anymore.

^ It's called politically correct in America to make a fuss about girls kissing girls or songs about it? that's...really weird. People here would probably find it politically incorrect to even make a remark about the song. Haha, even if she actually kissed a girl in the clip, I doubt anyone would even bother. The politically correct response would be something like 'we're happy that the dutch lesbian community is feeling good', lol. But then again I think no one would take it seriously. But that's coming from someone who lives in a country that considers Gay Pride Day like a good alternative for carnival for everyone... Who else hates genres? *raises hand* I really dislikes how it labels music - something so personal and diverse- into general catagories, only causing people not to listen to many good songs.

Yeah, I'd have to admit, I've disliked a song that I actually liked just because of a genre... which is pretty stupid. All these labels and stereotypes aren't helping anything. Just because you listen to this kind of music doesn't mean you're that. But I guess genres are necessary, for organization and such... I guess. I think the problem is all these stereotypes that come with the genres.

I can see where genres can help in classification of music, but I don't see why music should be classified at all. I mean, it's supposed to be freedom of expression, but all the genres really do is restrict. For instance, when people ask me what type of music I listen to, when I answer 'Wizard Rock', most people immediately look down on me. So I like Harry Potter, and so I like music based off of it. Why is that so strange? Because it's a new genre of music, and it's screwing with their perception of normality.

Actually I'm totally fine with genres like metal being separate from other genres ex., r&b and rap... and pop. I'm a metalhead by the way.

I think that genres give people preconceived notions about an artist or band, which can be good or it can be bad. Generally a lot of my favorite bands are classified COMPLETELY wrong and I just laugh, so I try to listen to whatever no matter the label it has.

Yeah, I do that too, Ammy. xD I don't really pay attention to labels. If I hear something I like, I'll download it and listen to it, no matter what. -nods-

I very much like jumping on purevolume every now and again and just randomizing the page until it hits on something interesting. I find a lot of great bands that way.

Haha, and I like it when she does that, because she's like "hey, check this out" and I do, and I like them. It saves me the time of searching for new bands, and she also weeds out all the crappy stuff. So, yay me!

I'm a metal fan first and foremost. Have been for most of my life. But I love other styles ranging from rock to punk to classical and movie scores. Even some pop and dance music...just not the really hard techno stuff. That does my brain in.

I agree that genres are annoying. My parents and brother are prime examples of people who will automatically hate a song before they've heard it because they have heard the genre was "rap" (aka crap in their opinion) or "country" (aka country/western/cowboy in my parent's opinion). It drives me insane, because my music taste is incredibly diverse, but if I want to share a song with them, they'll just turn their brains off right away when I tell them the genre! So in the end, there are only some songs that I can share, and others I just know they won't even try to appreciate Talking about Katy Pery's "I Kissed a Girl" - I agree with all of you. People who are offended by it and don't see it as the joke it is (joke as in not serious...not like it's a "joke of a song" or anything I like it! haha!) are just very close-minded. In a Christian magazine I subscribe to, a music reviewer guy said it was "disgusting" how the whole country loves this song and has brought it to it's #1 status. I'm a Christian, but I thought that was WAY out of line! Who is he to judge?? Especially when "the whole country" is not even Christian! So if it offends you, you Christian music-reviewer-guy, then don't listen to it. But to those of us out there who aren't offended, or don't even share the same beliefs - keep your mouth shut. Anyway. I have a question for all of you. When hearing a song for the first time, do you seem more drawn to the music or the lyrics? I think for me, it's a mix of both. There are some songs that I absolutely love because their lyrics strike deep within me, but others I only like because of their music, and I actually hate the lyrics. And then sometimes there are the true gems that have great music AND lyrics (see: "Burn Out Bright" by Switchfoot )

First of all, I think it's absurd there are actually people out there who are offended by the "I Kissed a Girl" song. Second of all, it's even more absurd (to me) that people actually like that song. It's so annoying and she can't even sing. But of course, that's only my humble opinion. To answer Gil's question; I'm a very musical person so to me the melody always comes first, lyrics second. While I do appreciate powerful lyrics, I always 'judge' a song based on the melody. I can still enjoy a song with a great melody but pointless lyrics. But I can't enjoy a song with great lyrics but the crappiest/blandest melody. Music without lyrics is still music but lyrics without a melody is not.

Hah! Your first paragraph sums up my thoughts on the song too. It's not offensive..it's just crap lol
I'm pretty much down the middle with what draws me to a song. It's hard to pin down exactly what gives me that WOW factor when listening to music. There will be just something that gives me goosebumps, makes my heart swell and generally make me feel good. It's different for every song.

For me, it's not just the melody or the lyrics, it's how these two things work together. And sometimes, lyrics don't even matter to me, usually in cases where I can't understand them. xD Then, it depends on how well the instruments work together with the voice.
For example, I love the song "Breathe Me" by Sia. If you read the lyrics to the song, they aren't something that makes you go WOW. But it fits so well with the melody that I really don't care.

Oooo... music... My music taste is a little weird to put it nicely (you should see my iPod lol ) I hate the genres thing too... I don't what half of them are anyway.... As for the melody or lyrics question.... I've never actually thought about it.... I think it's probably a mix of them both.... Although I normally find myself singing the lyrics rather than humming it if a song stays in my head... but then I wouldn't be able to sing it without the melody.... And I absolutely adore I Kissed a Girl... It's such a funny song and I really don't get the big deal about it...

Haha yeah, I do too.
Most everyone here seems to think they have a weird taste in music. I say we make a weird music thread in the other forum.
